Key takeaways

  • ✓Use one page for a student or early career application when it covers the evidence the job asks for.
  • ✓Use two pages as the normal Australian default for relevant experience, licences, qualifications and achievements.
  • ✓Let the industry and job ad decide what earns space, especially availability, tickets, registrations and key selection criteria.
  • ✓A longer resume is reasonable only when every extra section proves something useful for that specific role.

In Australia, a good default is one to two pages: one page for a student or early career applicant, and two pages when relevant experience needs room. There is no winning page count, so keep only evidence that helps the reader decide.

How long should a resume be in Australia?

For most Australian applications, aim for one to two pages and make page one do the important work. SEEK allows more for extensive experience when every detail adds value.

Relevance matters more than page count. A clear two-page resume is stronger than a crowded one in tiny type. Three pages can suit a senior specialist, but not for old duties.

Tip

Keep a master resume, then make a shorter copy for each application. Remove lines that do not support the ad.

What resume length suits your experience level?

Your experience level gives you a starting point; relevant evidence decides where you stop.

Experience level Useful starting point What deserves space
Student or first job One page Study, placements, volunteering, casual work, availability and relevant skills
Graduate or early career One to two pages Recent roles, projects, training and results linked to the job
Mid-career Two pages Recent achievements, core skills, qualifications and selected earlier roles
Senior or specialist Two to three pages if needed Leadership, specialist outcomes, major projects and current credentials
Career changer or returner One to two pages Transferable skills, relevant training and a clear explanation of the move

Students should prioritise evidence over history. A TAFE graduate applying for warehouse work might use one page for a forklift licence, placement hours, picking accuracy, safe manual handling and availability, not unrelated school subjects.

Early career workers can use two pages when the proof is real. A warehouse worker could show licences and the current role on page one, then earlier work and honest results such as orders picked per shift on page two.

Experienced applicants should edit by relevance, not age alone. A nurse may need two pages for registration, clinical skills, recent wards, mandatory training and outcomes, while unrelated hospitality work can be left out.

Career changers need a bridge, not a longer biography. Someone moving from retail supervision into administration can connect rostering, records, complaints and team coordination to the new requirements, then add software training.

Do different industries expect different resume lengths?

Industry changes what earns space, so one page for retail and two for health can both be right.

Retail and hospitality often need a focused one-page resume. Put customer service, point-of-sale systems, food safety, RSA if held, availability and recent results near the top. JSA found that retail and accommodation employers use shift availability as a key screening consideration. A barista can show weekend availability before older jobs.

Warehouse, labouring and trades resumes should lead with practical proof. Put licences, tickets, equipment, safety training and site experience near the top. JSA found that employers recruiting labourers and trades workers were more likely to rely on an interview or informal chat. A warehouse worker should name a relevant current forklift licence clearly.

Health and care applications may need the full two pages. Include the required qualification, registration or clearance, settings, checks, clinical or care skills and referees. A referee is someone an employer may contact to confirm your work. JSA found that health care and social assistance employers were especially likely to request applications, references, certificates and police checks.

Read this first

Follow the employer's instructions if the ad sets a page limit, file type or separate response. If it asks for key selection criteria, that means written answers showing how you meet named capabilities or requirements, not just a longer resume.

Office and professional roles reward selected detail. Keep the resume to one or two pages unless the role needs substantial project evidence. If an application asks for key selection criteria, answer those criteria in the requested format and use the resume for supporting evidence.

Academic and research roles are the main exception. A curriculum vitae, usually called a CV, can be much longer because it records publications, research, teaching, grants and presentations. For most Australian non-academic jobs, use a targeted resume instead.

Job Harbour can tailor your resume and write a matching cover letter for the exact ad, using only what you have done.

What do Australian employers actually look for in a resume?

Australian employers want a short application that makes relevant skills, qualifications, availability and experience easy to verify.

JSA's Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey found that relevant experience or skills were the leading application-stage priority, followed by qualifications or licences, availability and communication. The survey was conducted in 2022 and published in 2024, so use it as guidance rather than a promise about every vacancy.

Match the ad's language honestly. If a warehouse ad asks for dispatch, inventory and a forklift licence, use each term only when it describes your real experience or credential. Stocktake experience is useful, but it is not dispatch experience.

Show what changed because of your work. Duties say what you were asked to do; results show how you did it. A nurse can describe coordinating discharge paperwork and escalating concerns, while a retail worker can show better stock accuracy after changing a shelf-check routine.

Tailor one application at a time.

  1. Step 1: Copy the main duties, licences, qualifications and availability requirements into a short checklist.
  2. Step 2: Mark the proof for each requirement in your resume, study, volunteering or other honest experience.
  3. Step 3: Move the strongest proof to page one and delete repeated detail.
  4. Step 4: Check instructions, spelling, file name and attachments before sending.

Workforce Australia advises writing a new application for each job and using relevant ad keywords. It also accepts school or voluntary examples for selection criteria when paid experience is limited.

How can you cut a resume without losing useful evidence?

Cut repetition and low-value detail before you shrink the font or squeeze the margins.

Start with the least relevant material. Remove generic objectives, long duty lists, old school details, unrelated hobbies and repeated skills. Keep older work only when it proves a requirement.

Turn duties into evidence. Replace three vague bullets with one line saying what you did, how often or how much, and what changed. A nurse might use a specific example about medication checks or patient education without disclosing private information.

Use the second page deliberately. Start it with a useful section. If it contains only a few lines, edit them into page one or add only relevant evidence the ad requires.

Tip

Read your resume at 100 per cent zoom on your phone before sending it. If a licence, recent role or key result is hard to find, edit again.

Job Harbour keeps your master resume in a Career Profile so you can choose changes for each version.

Should you use a resume or a CV in Australia?

Use a targeted resume for most jobs in Australia, and use a longer CV when the employer is asking for a full academic or research history.

A resume is a job-specific summary. It focuses on the skills, experience, qualifications and achievements that relate to one vacancy. A warehouse and nursing application should not be identical.

A CV is a fuller record for specialist settings. Academic, scientific and research applications may ask for publications, teaching, projects, awards and presentations. Follow the ad, not a blanket one-page rule.

Where to start this week

Start with one real job ad and make a short resume version that answers its requirements.

  1. Step 1: Choose an ad on SEEK, Workforce Australia or the employer's site and highlight its five main requirements.
  2. Step 2: Set a one-page target for early career, or two pages when relevant experience needs the room.
  3. Step 3: Rewrite three bullets with an action, context and honest result.
  4. Step 4: Ask someone to find anything unclear, then check the file against the ad.

Frequently asked questions

Is two pages too long for a resume in Australia?

No. Two pages is a normal Australian default when both pages contain relevant evidence. It is too long when the second page repeats duties, includes unrelated history or does not support the job you want.

Should a graduate resume be one page?

One page is a good starting point for a student or recent graduate, but two pages can be useful if you have relevant placements, projects, volunteering, paid work or training. Keep the strongest evidence near the top.

How long should a resume be for a career change in Australia?

Aim for one to two pages and use the space to explain your transferable skills and relevant training. Show how your previous work connects to the new role, rather than listing every old duty.

Can an Australian resume be three pages?

Yes, when you have substantial relevant experience, senior responsibility or specialist evidence that cannot be presented clearly in two pages. Make sure page one already gives the reader a strong, relevant picture.

What should be on page one of an Australian resume?

Put your name and contact details, a short targeted profile, the most relevant skills or licences, and your recent experience on page one. The reader should see why you fit the vacancy without searching through old roles.
